Some Still Believe - Live at Gilman (Full Set)
This isn't a video from a Redding show, but Some Still Believe was a Redding straight edge youth crew band. As Matt McCall puts it here, "we're Some Still Believe. We're from far away, and that's all you need to know." This video is from 2001 or 2002?

Set It Straight Gets Arrested 2006
FAQ
1) I did not shoot the video.
2) The father didn't try and stop the cops because THEY'RE COPS and he would still be in prison if he tried.
3) As a result of this video, media tenacity by yours truly, and almost 50,000 emails, the Redding Police Department was eventually forced to drop all charges on everyone arrested, issue a formal apology via press conference, and undergo special sensitivity training on how to deal with passive objectors. Haha."

Private Interest Interview
Back in June I began writing a zine based around issues going on in Redding. I have recently decided, though, to drop the zine, so I can keep sane and organized in my life. I always have a million projects brewing in my head and have a bad habbit of thinking I can realistically do them all. The next couple of post here on Radding Core will be the articles that were meant for the failed zine. This first one is an interview from July with Tommy of Private Interest. Hope you enjoy.
+ PI has had a lot of line up changes in its time as a band. What is the current line up?
The Current lineup is Me, Josh westfall on bass, Tyler Gwinn on drums and Dylan west on guitar.
+ Why did Haeden leave the band?
Haeden had actually planned on leaving since PIs conception, it was just a miracle he stuck around so long. His dad got a job in Castro Valley (the white bread version of Oakland) and had to move down there. Kinda sucks, but i guess that what happens when you are a kid band haha
+ Who is the true king of surf guitar!?
Awh man, as far as that reverbed-out machinegun sound, Dick Dale for sure. As a genre though, theres so many different things you can add to it that I feel like every surf guitarist adds their own flavor to it. The dude from Hawaii Samurai has a tone that sounds new aged but menacing as hell and the guy from the Tijuana Panthers has just an old school treblely sound, I dig em all.
+ What is the story behind AMDM?
Well it stands for Arrogant Metal Douchebag Mentality and basically, a few months back we kinda had beef with this other local band. We tried working with them on numerous occasions and they thought it would look cool to make fun of us. We obviously didnt really take any offense because they were trying to put themselves above us by telling us that we werent "technical" enough to be called a "real" band, and the song is just kindof a "hey fuck you I may not be that great but at least I have fun" statement.
On another level the whole thing is a statement on making money off of music in general. I guess its a generic punk thing to talk about but I just think that making money off of it rules, and if you do a good job thats even better, but dont lose sight on what you started (or should have started) your band for: having fun with your friends.
+ What was it like growing up as a punk in Burney?
Ah man, I havint got this question in a while. Basically really shitty but ten times more exciting than being a punk anywhere else but a small town. A lot of people hated me; girls, skaters, rednecks, misfits kids ect and I was caught in the middle of it which kinda blew. On the other hand, though, it was amazing. Theres a certain magicalness about not knowing everything about what you dig, especially when its punk. I guess its kindof hard to explain, but when you dont live where anyone else is "punk", theres no music stores, scene e.c.t, you find things yourself. Before i even knew the concept of DIY I was getting shit from the local Ben Franklin to make customized jean vests out of paint pens and fabric. Finding a Clash album at a yard sale was like the biggest thing ever. You dont take anything for granted and you grab onto what you can. I think that "magicalness" kinda dulls out over a period of time, but the excitement of growing into this stuff with my middle finger at a world that had no idea what I was was a kickass experience and I wouldint trade it for anything (though I hated it at the time)
+ What where the bands that got you onto punk?
When I was nine years old I borrowed my older friend's "War On Errorism" by Nofx and Discography of the Ramones and fell hard for the genre. I think he was trying to get me to stop listening to shitty rap (which I guess kinda worked although I still dig that genre as well) and after a few weeks I played that shit in my walkman so much they got trashed. He got tired of getting back scratchy cds so he just burned me his entire Itunes library and made me a cd case full of kickass albums. Best gift i ever got, I still have it in fact. I eventually got into old Green Day and Operation Ivy and i have been diving deeper into the punk and hardcore rabbit hole ever since. I feel like if you dig punk that much, you never stop expanding.

+ What are some messages that you wish to communicate through PI songs?
Well the band started as a lash out to the situation I was caught up in around Burney, so initially it was just kindof a "fuck you" band. But recently I suppose its been a living journal kinda thing for me. I have a lot of aggression I suppose that I need to explode with, PI serves as that vessel. A lot of stuff I just want to be about having fun and being a kid in Redding, and some other new things Im writing are scene critiques and more politically charged. I did write a new one we play called "anxiety" which is like a; "Hey im going to start kicking the shit out of my T.V. if I cant get un trapped from my room in the middle of the woods" kinda thing. I suppose it comes down to whatever I feel like writing at the time haha.
+ Any future plans for PI at the moment?
Fo Shizzle. First off we need to tighten our new guitarist and get a goddamn van. Then we are going to play a shitload out of town shows. We aleady played one in Chico and we are planning on heading up there the 20th to play with this other kid band "Icko Sicko". After summer winds down we are going to clamp down and really focus on writing new material as well as recording. Should be fun as hell!

32FPS
32 Frames Per Second (32FPS) was a very short lived hardcore punk project that lasted from the winter through the fall of 2007. Their sound was based on short melodic blasts fueled by the influence of Kid Dynamite, Paint It Black, and The Nerve Agents. 32FPS literally came out of nowhere. I remember on a rainy day afternoon show at Rachid's garage with Scared to Death, Skeletons, and Belda Beast. I was standing outside waiting for the show to start and saw Josh Owens and Curt Baer loading gear into the garage. I hadn't heard of any new band they were in at time, so I was a little confused. Before I really knew what was going on, 32FPS was ripping through their set. Just a couple of weeks later, they put out a killer 10 song demo. The songs on it are super catchy, witty, pissed, and short. They played a handful of rad shows complete with covers of “Black Sheep” by Nerve Agents and "Roots Radicals" by Rancid, and then broke up.Curt Baer on 32FPS:
“32FPS started as a project meant to span a two month period. Earl was back in Redding, albeit temporarily, and we wanted to do a band in that short amount of time. The idea was to write a demo, book studio time, record, and play a few shows in 2 months before Earl left. We did that, but Earl didn't move, so we kept it going for a while. This is the demo we produced, written and recorded in less than a month and with a not-too-subtle tip of the hat to Kid Dynamite."

Social Concern

Social Concern was formed in 2003 by Sarah Shintaku, Brandi Benson, and Ami Rose. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), they are the only all girl punk band to ever come out of Redding. I remember the first time I saw them was in 2004 at Caldwell Park. I wasn't too into them the first time I saw them, but over the next year, they really began to grow on me. In 2005, I was trying to set up a show and contacted Social Concern about playing. Their bass player Ami and I started talking on AIM about the show and other random things, and it ended coming out that she only lived a mile from my house. Social Concern practiced there too. Out of this is how I became friends with Ami and met the rest of the band. In the late summer of 2006, Ami and Brandi moved to Chico and Sarah to Sacramento. After moving, they continued with a couple different drummers, released two more albums, did two Western US tours, and countless west coast tours. After their last tour in the summer of 2010, they went on to an undefined hiatus.Redding Line Up

Parker
Parker was a five piece straight edge hardcore band. They were a Redding band, but Ross, their singer lived down around Sacramento. Parker played just about every single Redding hardcore show with Set It Straight throughout most of 2006. At the time I wasn't into modern styles of hardcore, but this band always made me stoked, because they played fast hardcore with short sets and lots of energy. As far as I know, none of the members are straight edge anymore, which makes lines like "if an X on my hand means I'm alone, so it be goodbye" awesome. They sang about other things besides straight edge, so whatever. That's just life and hardcore. By the end of 2006, the band fell apart and broke up.

Short Circuit
Short Circuit was a short lived hardcore band that existed in the fall of 2007 until I think the early winter of 2008. They were a themed band as well. They were themed after the 80's movie "Short Circuit." They put out a demo and only played one show. That demo rips in my option. It's short hard hitting hardcore with great movie clips. It's shaking in the recording in some spots, but that's how a demo is suppose to sound. Jxrad is listed in on the demo as the bass player, but he never ended up in the band. At their one and only show, they didn't have a bass player, so they just played without one. After the show and the demo came out, they added a second guitar player and found a bass player. I heard various reason as to why they broke up, but I forget exactly what they were. Regardless, though, I wish they had played more shows, because they were a fun band.

Welfare Scouts (1-8/05)

The Welfare Scouts was a street punk band, and the first real band I ever played in. We formed in Jan of 05 and broke up in Aug of that year. During our time as a band we played I think 10 shows. We released a demo in the summer, but never really "recorded." We were too broke to afford to go to a studio and none of us knew how to do home recording, so we recorded the whole thing on a boom box. Nate Corbin was a huge help in transferring our tapes into mp3s on his computer, so we could put them out on cdr and hand them out. I still have a lot of great memories from this band. Being it was a great experience for me, and I met a lot of great people.Line up:

Skeletons

Skeletons was a straight edge hardcore punk band that lasted from the fall of 06 to the summer of 07. In their short time as a band, they put out a ripping demo, played a lot of Redding shows, and did a short tour with Set It Straight. Their demo is still awesome to me. It has great lyrics, and it's own unique sound. Skeletons' sound was a mixture of cut and dry hc with some oi influences. After Skeletons broke up Joey, Kyle, and Harry went off to form Separation, and Jared and Josh went on to form A Public Infection (later known as Damaged). Skeletons was an awesome band, and I had a lot of fun going wild with friends at the shows they played.Line Up

White Lie (05-06)
White Lie was a punk band from Redding, and the first band I ever played drums in. The sound of the band was really influenced by Redd Kross, The Germs, The Misfits, and Dead Kennedys. I can't say we were as cool as our influences, but we had really great time playing together and getting into trouble. The band formed in I think early 2005 and broke up in the summer of 2006. In the short time the band was around, it went through a bunch of line up changes. Not being a founding member, this is how I ended up in the band. When the original drummer got kicked out in the summer of 2005, I joined on drums after only learning how to play a few months earlier. In our time as a band we tried to accomplish as much as we could with our limited means and knowledge. We recorded a demo, played every where we could, got disqualified at the Civic Center battle of the bands, played Chico once, met some cool people, made some rad friends, and earned a little following. In June of 2006 things came to an end, though, when we suffered the tragedy of our bass player Julie passing away. After she passed, it didn't feel right to continue on, so we decided to disband. She is still greatly missed by us all.
Since the line up changed so many times, it would take too long to list them all, so I'm only going to list the ending line up.

Barefoot Army (01-03)

Barefoot Army (BFA) was what I'd call a thrash band, but they also had a pretty unique sound mixing different genre elements of punk, metal, thrash, and even ska in one of their songs. The first Redding show I ever went to in the spring of 2003 at the Millville Grange Barefoot Army was the opening band. I'd been to a handful of other concerts before, but this was the first hardcore/punk show I'd ever been to, and during their set was the first time I ever went into a pit as well. Sadly, though, I only saw this band twice before they broke up. During that time I wasn't all that into them musically either, just the energy of their live shows. It wasn't until a while after they'd broke up that I got really into them, and their stuff grew on me. Which is at the same time I got bummed that I never really got to appreciate them while they were still around. I'm happy I at least have their albums.
Their old website is no longer up, but one of their guitar players Myke made a myspce for them some years ago. http://www.myspace.com/barefootarmysince2001

American Waste 03-05
When I first started going to shows in Redding when I was 15 in 2003, American Waste was the first local band besides Till Death that I got into. They played damn near every show I went to from 2003-2004. They were always good too and were known for doing great covers. Covers from Black Flag (Rise Above, Six Pack, Louie Louie, American Waste), F-Minus (We're All Deadmen), Operation Ivy (Jaded), and even Slayer (Raining Blood)! It was a sad day when they played their last show at The Space in the spring of 2005. They will always have a special place in my heart when it comes to the Redding scene.

Why Start This Blog?
I have decided to start this blog to share past and present bands from the Redding area. I have been going to shows in Redding for almost 10 years now and have had some many experiences in it's punk/hardcore scene. I really want to share and give back to people the music that has shaped this town for me. I know Curt Baer did a blog just like this one named Redding Music Archive a couple of years ago, but since that blog has stopped, I want to pick up where it left off by covering bands from the late 90's through present. Hopefully I can have the time to keep this blog going! I will try my best to keep it updated.
