Social Concern

Social Concern was formed in 2003 by Sarah Shintaku, Brandi Benson, and Ami Rose. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), they are the only all girl punk band to ever come out of Redding. I remember the first time I saw them was in 2004 at Caldwell Park. I wasn't too into them the first time I saw them, but over the next year, they really began to grow on me. In 2005, I was trying to set up a show and contacted Social Concern about playing. Their bass player Ami and I started talking on AIM about the show and other random things, and it ended coming out that she only lived a mile from my house. Social Concern practiced there too. Out of this is how I became friends with Ami and met the rest of the band. In the late summer of 2006, Ami and Brandi moved to Chico and Sarah to Sacramento. After moving, they continued with a couple different drummers, released two more albums, did two Western US tours, and countless west coast tours. After their last tour in the summer of 2010, they went on to an undefined hiatus.

Parker

Parker was a five piece straight edge hardcore band. They were a Redding band, but Ross, their singer lived down around Sacramento. Parker played just about every single Redding hardcore show with Set It Straight throughout most of 2006. At the time I wasn't into modern styles of hardcore, but this band always made me stoked, because they played fast hardcore with short sets and lots of energy. As far as I know, none of the members are straight edge anymore, which makes lines like "if an X on my hand means I'm alone, so it be goodbye" awesome. They sang about other things besides straight edge, so whatever. That's just life and hardcore. By the end of 2006, the band fell apart and broke up.

Short Circuit

Short Circuit was a short lived hardcore band that existed in the fall of 2007 until I think the early winter of 2008. They were a themed band as well. They were themed after the 80's movie "Short Circuit." They put out a demo and only played one show. That demo rips in my option. It's short hard hitting hardcore with great movie clips. It's shaking in the recording in some spots, but that's how a demo is suppose to sound. Jxrad is listed in on the demo as the bass player, but he never ended up in the band. At their one and only show, they didn't have a bass player, so they just played without one. After the show and the demo came out, they added a second guitar player and found a bass player. I heard various reason as to why they broke up, but I forget exactly what they were. Regardless, though, I wish they had played more shows, because they were a fun band.
