P.A.W.N.S. // POLITICAL SILENCE - Split (1997)

Genre: Anarcho Punk
Format: CD
Year: 1997

P.A.W.N.S. - Sacrifice (1999)

(Disclaimer: the cover is originally in color.
But this was the only version I could find that wasn't burry as hell)

Genre: Anarcho Punk
Format: CD
Year: 1999

"Sacrifice" is the second release by the P.A.W.N.S. At this point, I believe they were still a Santa Cruz band, but it's a damn fine EP that's crucial in their discography. Some of my top picks off of this release are "Poison Breed" and "Corporate Fascism."

P.A.W.N.S. - Rabble On The Move (2001)

Year: 2001
Genre: Anarcho Punk
Format: CD

On "Rabble On The Move" the PAWNS cover a large amount of musical ground. All the elements you'd expected from them but pushed further. Some jazz elements and odd time signatures layered with fast and straight head punk. Lyrically on point and witty as hell.

"Tax the wealthy / Jail the lawyers / Rob the bankers / Jail the judges"

P.A.W.N.S. - ...And They Thought Anarchy Was Bad (2000)

The P.A.W.N.S. (power and wealth need slaves) were an incredible band that left a huge mark on the Chico punk scene that can still be seen today. They were originally from Santa Cruz but moved to Chico around 2000. Their sound was very melody driven in the style of UK greats like Chumbawamba and The Subhumans, but they also knew how to play fast in 80's USHC fashion. Their third release "...And They Thought Anarchy Was Bad" has always been my favorite in their discography. Not too long. Not too short. And each song features something a little different. Very beautifully put together.

CALLOUS NEGLECT

(Callous Neglect recording at Burnt Ramen for the Suburban American Tract Home Project)

SMEAT - One More Time With Feeling (2003)

SMEAT is possibly the most wild and gut wrenching punk band to come out of Chico. The cover of their last album "One More Time With Feeling," released exactly two years after 911, outta tell you what you're in for. 18 tracks of pissed hardcore punk drenched in blown out noise. And if you weren't feeling anything just yet, the album comes with a ska cover of "Nothing" by Negative Approach. Yes, a ska cover complete with oi's. The lyrics of the album are fueled by hate and caved in under the despair of post industrial America. The kind of punk that only the ugliness of the early 00's could create.

NOGOODNIX - S/t (2002)

The NOGOODNIX where a Chico punk band from the early 2000's. Definitely one of the greats from that era. I only ever got to see them once in Redding at Serendipity when I was 16. I remember they did a sick cover of "New Age" by the Subhumans. A few months later I was able to get a burned copy of their full length album. The album holds up and is solid as hell too. It's written really well across the board from the lyrics to the instrumentation. I highly recommend giving it a listen. Their singer, Jimmy Lo, and guitarist, Elliot Lang, are still making noise together in Chico too with their new band LOS NEW HUEVOS.

SOME STILL BELIEVE - Demo 2001

This post is a total copy and paste from Curt Baer's old blog "Redding Music Archive."
The links no longer work on that blog, so I've decided to repost this solid demo.

"We broke up in 2000 and decided to to get back together later in 2001 and be I guess a little more "serious." We got a little better at writing music and didn't want to be a Ten Yard Fight rip off anymore, and do our own thing the best we could. We recorded with Bill Staeck at Pachcord studios (redding) again but it sounded way better this time. Nate Relph was no longer in the band however he still moshed hard for us and even roadied for us. Anyways, That is when Mike Quirk joined at 2nd guitar. This is when we started playing sacto and the bay area more after this demo came out. On a side note, the only song we still played from Demo 2000 when we got back as a band in 2001 was "Dedicated Few." We were so fucking ridiculously straight edge at this point haha. Oh yeah we had some extra time in the studio so we recorded "Big Mouth" by Gorilla Biscuits. The take you hear on there is all live and played really fucking well for 1 take and for guys who could barely play! That is Taylor Smith and Dave Maslin doing the talking at the beginning of the song trying to get the "Yo sucka...." part down.
